hydride as its feeder fuel, it produces 12 watts of power at 12 volts, a popular voltage
used by many products running off DC current. There are no moving parts, no emissions, and
the unit can be used in any orientation. It generates very little heat and thus can
literally be held in hand or attached to a belt like a cell phone, if needed, during
operation. A key advantage of the PFC over alternative portable power is that it can be
"refueled" in a matter of seconds by simply replacing the hydride canister. Most
batteries offer only one use, and those that can be recharged can take hours to do so.

Researchers Report Progress in Miniaturizing Fuel Cell Power Source for Consumer
Electronic Devices - Motorola/Business Wire
Previous DMFC systems have used discrete tubes to mix the
methanol fuel with water and deliver it to the fuel cell. Motorola has now successfully
demonstrated the use of multi-layer ceramic technology for processing and delivering fuel
and air to the fuel cell membrane electrode assembly (MEA). This fuel delivery system can
be built into a miniature fuel cell. The prototype, shown this week at the Power 2000
Conference in San Diego, CA, combines fuel mixing and microchannels for delivery,
substrate for MEA mounting, and electrical contact in just two ceramic pieces. The lower
ceramic piece handles the liquid fuel processing while the upper piece provides for
passive air delivery (air-breathing). The MEA is sandwiched between the two ceramic
layers, making for simple assembly. This ceramic technology also simplifies the
interconnection of multiple fuel cells.

Conversion Devices Reports on Hydrogen Stored in a Solid For Fuel Cells: The Auto
Industry's Game Changer - ECD/PRNewswire
Propulsion experts agree that cars in the
near future will be electrically-driven and fuel cell powered to satisfy the need for
environmentally-responsible transportation. A consensus is also forming -- in both
automobile industry and energy supply sectors -- that hydrogen will be the ultimate fuel
of the 21st century. Enter ECD's game-changer. "It's our intention to lead the way to
a hydrogen economy," said Stempel, "ECD's metal-hydride storage systems offer a
cost-effective, safe and efficient means of transporting the energy necessary for vehicles
of the future." ...Recent advancements in metal hydrides facilitate storing
sufficient hydrogen to power a fuel cell electric vehicle several hundred miles. And,
unlike every alternative method currently under consideration for future cars-onboard
reformation of hydrocarbon fuels to hydrogen, high-pressure or cryogenic storage-carrying
hydrogen as a solid in a metal-hydride matrix is by far the safest approach.
9/12/2000 IMPCO, Lawrence
Livermore & Thiokol Team Achieve Breakthrough in Hydrogen Storage for Fuel Cells -
IMPCO/PRNewswire
IMPCO Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: IMCO) announced today that a
team of scientists from IMPCO, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories (LLNL) and Thiokol
Propulsion, Alcoa Industrial Components Group, a subsidiary of Alcoa Inc., (NYSE: AA) successfully hydroburst
tested a high performance prototype hydrogen storage cylinder designed for Fuel Cell
Vehicle applications (FCVs) and achieved a mass performance record of 11.3% hydrogen
storage by weight, the highest storage efficiency ever demonstrated. The significance of
this achievement means that fuel cell vehicles can now travel further between refueling
intervals (greatly extended range) than previously thought possible. On-board direct
hydrogen storage is simple, cost-effective, durable, and safe for automotive use and
allows elimination of on-board fuel reformers, which are expensive, complex, and
physically large in size and generate emissions. This new compressed hydrogen storage
device allows more efficient storage compared to alternatives such as metal hydrides
(1.5-3% by weight at room temperature) or liquid hydrogen (up to 8% by weight). The safe
gaseous hydrogen pressure vessel technology they are developing can reversibly store more
energy per unit mass than any other non-nuclear technology.

chairman, president, and CEO of Rentech, commented, "Sand Creek represents a
milestone for both Rentech and the United States Gas- to-Liquids industry. Conventional
thinking is that due to high natural gas prices, GTL may not be economically feasible in
the U.S. Rentech believes its strategy of purchasing mothballed methanol plants at
favorable prices compared to greenfield construction and retrofitting of such GTL plants
will prove to be a cost-effective method which will produce cleaner, sulfur- and aromatic-
free fuels for US consumers. Existing methanol plants already have syngas production
equipment in place. Such equipment generally constitutes some 60% of the cost of a
greenfield GTL plant."

According to Tirello, the current power
market conditions have created a ripe market ready to usher in a new era in electricity
generation. Utilities have been too cautious to commit the capital to expand and upgrade
their fleet of generation facilities and their aging transmission and distributions
systems in the United States -- a problem compounded by an unprecedented deregulation
process. "Demand for electricity is growing at an unexpectedly rapid clip and, in our
view, the utility industry is not prepared to meet the requirements of a strong,
technologically-oriented, Internet economy," said Tirello. "Deregulation allows
distributed generation technologies, like H Power's fuel cells, to directly address the
needs of utility customers." Tirello estimates that the residential market for fuel
cells will reach $7 billion in 2007 and $30 billion in 2017.
